"Effective Altruism is about using evidence and reason to figure out how to benefit others as much as possible, and taking action on that basis."
EA SG's Focus
Effective altruism is about answering one simple question: how can we use our resources to help others the most?
Based on the importance, neglectedness and tractibility (INT) reasoning, there are several cause areas that are prominent and prioritised in the EA community globally:
- Fighting extreme poverty
- Animal suffering
- The future of the human race
With limited capacity, our chapter is currently focusing on the cause area of global poverty alleviation.
We focus mainly on promoting:
- Effective giving (e.g. charities in international development & health)
- Impact-oriented career (based on 80,000 Hours' guide)
Some EA organisations' work that we share here:
It does not mean that the EA approach can only be applied in these areas.
Essentially, effective altruism is about how we can use our time and money more effectively, to help as many people (and sentient beings) as much as possible. If you take an evidence-based approach, consider all your options and make a decision to act based on careful reasoning, then you are applying EA in the way you do good.
Focusing on effective giving/philanthropy and encouraging high-impact careers is how our chapter can optimize our impact in a small, educated and high-income city like Singapore.
When the opportunities arise, we also have activities and discussions on other areas of EA (e.g. animal welfare, existential risks, rationality).
A budding community
Kyle first organised an EA event in NUS in Aug 2015.
Soon after, we had our first EA meetup in Singapore. These monthly meetups have been ongoing (every first Sat) to introduce those who are new to EA. We also have events, focused on themes like effective giving (e.g. through giving games) and high-impact career (using 80,000 Hours' career advice).
Our group evolved from casual meetups to more structured ones, including volunteers involved in working groups for EA initiatives here. In general, these projects contribute towards:
- Promoting effective giving
- EA & 80,000 Hours outreach
Our community includes people from different backgrounds. Some are in stable careers, earning to give. Some are students in Junior Colleges, international schools and universities, exploring how to engage and promote EA among their peers. Others are educators and academics. Many more are in varied professions, engaging EA in different capacities, in different spheres of influence. A few are philanthropists who are already doing good, but care to do it more effectively.
EA Singapore is still a new community. What brings us together is our appreciation of the rational and evidence-based approach to do good. We want to be better informed and strive to make the most of our limited resources to be more impact-oriented.
We welcome you!
Regardless of cause areas that you support, we welcome anyone interested in being impact-oriented and in doing good better to join our friendly community.
We recognise people's motivation to do good and we want to hone and harness this good intention into effective actions.
Connect with us if you are interested in:
- learning more about effective altruism (EA),
- finding out what actions you can take to increase your impact,
- getting involved in our activities and projects,
- exploring other aspects of EA.
Come along for our next meetup to meet other like-minded people. Or drop us a message.
