+ Student Outreach (SHIC)
Objective: Plan outreach programme to students at secondary / JC levels to raise awareness about EA.
What to do: If you can identify an opportunity for EA Singapore to share about EA concepts to students, work with us to bring an educational experience of EA to the students. This would be based mainly on Students for High Impact Charity (SHIC)'s curriculum.
Timeframe: One-off sharing (~2.5 hours) or Three-part workshop series (1.5 hour per session)
Note: This is not limited to students from MOE-schools. We also think that those who work in the field of "Education & Career Guidance" (ECG) might be interested in the 80,000 Hours' concepts for career advice to their students.
+ University Outreach (80,000 Hours)
Objective: Introduce 80,000 Hours (and EA) to university students to encourage & support them in making a high-impact career choice.
What to do: If you are a student or a staff (e.g. Professor, career guidance officer) at a local university, help to bring EA to your college. Help us organise an event/talk to share with students about 80,000 Hours, to provide career advice geared towards positive social impact. Even better, set up an EA/80,000 Hours club in your school!
Timeframe: One-off sharing (~2.5 hours)
Note: 80,000 Hours focuses on university students and EA Singapore follows suit. However, this is also applicable to students in polytechnic or young adults seeking high-impact career advice. Let us know if you have an opportunity for us to engage with students.
+ Connect EA Singapore to a target audience
Objective: Introduce the idea of EA (or 80,000 Hours) to a new audience - promote effective giving, cause prioritisation & career impact.
What to do: Help us with our outreach. Connect us to individuals or groups that you think can benefit from knowing about EA. Or support us in developing our outreach activities.
Our target groups include:
- Students (15 years old and above)
- Donors (interested in effectiveness & impact of their giving)
- Companies (e.g. CSR programme)
- Philanthropists (e.g. to share about cause prioritisation)
- Social impact sector (e.g. social enterprise, impact evaluators, NGOs)

+ Individual Fundraiser
Objective: Fundraise for an EA-recommended charity.
What to do: Create a fundraiser for an effective charity so that you can raise awareness of the work that these organisations do and concretely address an international development / health issue.
Timeframe: Any time
Note: In Singapore, there is a fundraising rule for overseas beneficiaries. This project would be a personal fundraiser for those who are interested to support any of the effective charities known to the EA community. We advise that you do this in an individual capacity, reaching out only to people that you know. EA Singapore does not process any donations but we can provide you with more information & support.
+ Giving What We Can (GWWC) Pledge
Objective: Take the GWWC pledge and commit to giving a portion of your income to the organisations that you think can do the most good with it.
What to do: You can either do the Try Giving or the GWWC Pledge.
The Pledge to give:
“I recognise that I can use part of my income to do a significant amount of good. Since I can live well enough on a smaller income, I pledge that for the rest of my life or until the day I retire, I shall give at least ten percent of what I earn to whichever organisations can most effectively use it to improve the lives of others, now and in the years to come. I make this pledge freely, openly, and sincerely.”
Timeframe: Decided by you (Try Giving Pledge) or lifetime/career-long commitment (GWWC Pledge)
Note: The Pledge is in no way legally binding. It is a commitment that you enter into voluntarily and people who pledge self-report their giving to GWWC. Taking the pledge serves more as a personal commitment. We advise that you take it only when you feel ready to or test how you fit with this through Try Giving.
+ "Everyday Giving" Campaign
Objective: Remind and prompt those interested to give effectively - to give in small amounts, daily.
What to do: Design an "everyday giving" campaign, which sends out daily/weekly reminders to EA community members to prompt small amounts of giving to effective organisations. The volunteers for this project need to consider all the sensitivities around such a campaign and when it's ready, to oversee the execution of the campaign.
Timeframe: 3 months (Start: July 2017 onwards)
Note: This is an idea suggested by an EA member. We need 2-5 volunteers to kickstart this project, including a leader. It would be good if you have experience in online marketing, fundraising, copywriting or data analysis, but these are not absolutely necessary.
+ Birthday Giving Games
Objective: Play the giving game on your birthday with your friends. You can either do it online or at an in-person event (e.g. your birthday party!).
What to do: In a Giving Game, participants learn about a few pre-selected charities, think about and discuss their relative merits, and choose which charity will get a real donation*. Play the Giving Game on your birthday to get your friends thinking about what their giving philosophy is - how do they decide who to donate to?
*The real donation can be from:
- The Life You Can Save (subject to application for their sponsorship)
- Yourself (you sponsor the giving game)
- Your friends (if you want a fundraising element to this as well)
At the end, your friends will vote for which charity they'd give to, from your pre-selected list. Their votes will be honoured through the real donation*. (See general instructions for a typical Giving Game.)
Timeframe: 3 hours (research & pre-select list of three charities) + 1.5 hour (playing the GG and debrief)
Note: The Giving Game is usually played at an event, sponsored by TLYCS. The "Birthday Giving Game" is an innovative idea from a local EA member. If you plan to be giving to an effective charity, this could be a meaningful way to celebrate your birthday. Get your friends together to think about effective giving too.
+ Impact Evaluation: Regional Charities
Objective: Evaluate the impact of a number of charities in Southeast Asia, to identify a few effective charities for donors to consider.
What to do: This is a completely new endeavor so we need help in identifying which charities to evaluate and doing some basic search on the streamlined charities. The volunteer will be guided in this process.
Note: One of the requests from EA Singapore is effective charities in Singapore and Southeast Asia region.
We generally recommend to people the effective charities recommended by GiveWell and The Life You Can Save (TLYCS). GiveWell evaluates charities and recommends those that are highly effective to give to. TLYCS is an organization that promotes effective giving to target global poverty alleviation. These are organizations that we trust.
The effective charities that are recommended tend to be serving the Sub-Saharan African communities. In EA, we find that it doesn't matter who we help as long as we are being as impactful as we can. However, many who are interested in effective giving in Singapore prefers to give towards regional charities.
EA Singapore is now looking into a pilot project to evaluate a few charities in this region.
+ Landscape study: CSR Culture
Objective: Research and understand the CSR culture and impact of companies in Singapore
What to do: Research on CSR trends (e.g. activities, cause areas, where they impact on - local or overseas, their decision-making processes) and impact of their giving & volunteerism.
Note: We think that many CSR programmes are well-intentioned to do good but they can benefit from being more impact-oriented, with an evidence-based approach and to cause prioritize. Before we start reaching out to the business community, we'd like to research on what the CSR trends are and have an understanding on their impact.
+ Cause Prioritisation in Southeast / South Asia
Objective: Identify the causes that are cost-effective to address and relevant for those living in poverty in this region
What to do:
+ Compile a list of high impact career options in Singapore
Objective: To have a compilation of jobs that are available in Singapore, that fall in the 80,000 Hours' type of high-impact career paths. This will be useful for those who are interested in high impact career options to have a reference list of what they could possibly do.
What to do: Help to compile what these jobs are, descriptions and where one can look for these jobs (e.g. job portals).
Note: 80,000 Hours is an EA organization. We share with people, especially young graduating students, that there are a few career path types that are higher in social impact and recommend that they consider those options as they choose their careers.
Based on 80,000 Hours' research, the 4 types of high-impact career pathways are: (i) earning to give, (ii) advocacy, (iii) research, and (iv) direct work.
+ Voluntourism's Impact
Objective: Look into the scale of voluntourism in its various forms and understand the impact (positive/negative) in this region
What to do:
